Playa Negra

A world-class reef break in a tiny village.

Why go

Playa Negra is a pilgrimage wave: the fast, barreling right-hander over rock reef that surf films made famous, in front of a village that's stayed small and slow.

Be clear-eyed: the main wave at Playa Negra breaks over rock reef, and it's for experienced surfers. When it's on, it's one of the best rights in Costa Rica. Nearby stretches of sand offer gentler options, but people come here for the reef, not for lessons.

The village behind the beach is tiny — a few sodas, surf lodges, and dusty lanes. That's the appeal. As a day trip from Tamarindo it pairs well with Avellanas: check both, surf where the crowd isn't, eat casado at a soda, drive home at golden hour.

Pickups & logistics

Fewer scheduled tours come this far south; guided surf trips and private drivers from Tamarindo are the usual way in without a rental car.
