FAQ

Straight answers

The questions people actually ask before a Tamarindo trip — answered without the brochure voice.

Planning

How far ahead should I book tours?
In high season (roughly December–April): sunset catamarans and full-day trips a week or two ahead, everything else a day or two out. In green season, day-of booking works for most activities. Airport transfers are worth locking in whenever you book flights.
When is the best time of year to visit?
Dry season (December–April) is reliably sunny, busy, and priced accordingly. Green season (May–November) brings afternoon rain, empty beaches, fuller waterfalls, and better rates — with mornings usually clear enough for anything. Surf runs all year.
Do I need a rental car?
Usually not for a Tamarindo-based stay: the town is walkable, tours include pickup, and private drivers handle beach-hopping and airport runs. Rent if you're planning multiple independent day trips or staying well outside town — and take the 4x4 for the dirt roads south.
Is Tamarindo good for families?
Yes — estuary boat safaris, catamaran sails, ziplining, horseback rides, Palo Verde riverboats, and beginner surf lessons all work well with kids. Check minimum ages on ATV driving and white-water rafting, which have real limits.

Tours & logistics

Where do tours pick up?
Nearly all operators pick up in central Tamarindo and Langosta, most cover Playa Grande, Hacienda Pinilla, and the Flamingo–Potrero stretch, and many reach Avellanas, Conchal, and Brasilito. Enter your accommodation at checkout and confirm the meeting point with the operator — informal addresses are the norm here.
What should I bring on a typical tour?
Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, water, and closed shoes for anything with 'ATV,' 'zipline,' 'waterfall,' or 'volcano' in the title. Boat trips: swimsuit, towel, a light layer for the ride home. Operators provide the specialized gear.
Can I see nesting sea turtles?
Seasonally, at Playa Grande — a protected leatherback nesting beach with ranger-led night tours roughly October through March. Tours are regulated and sightings are never guaranteed; that's the honest deal, and it's still worth doing.
What happens if weather cancels my tour?
Operators typically reschedule or refund weather cancellations — the exact policy is on each Viator listing. It's one reason to book big-ticket boats early in your stay rather than the last night.

This site

How does booking through this site work?
Browse and compare here; the booking itself happens on Viator, a TripAdvisor company, with live availability, their traveler protections, and free cancellation on most tours (usually up to 24 hours ahead).
Do you charge anything extra?
No. Prices are Viator's prices. We may earn a commission from Viator on bookings made through our links — it comes out of their side, not yours.
Are the ratings real?
Ratings and review counts come from Viator's verified traveler reviews. Our 'top rated' sorting weighs the rating against how many people actually reviewed the tour, so a 5.0 with three reviews doesn't outrank a 4.9 with two thousand.
