Transfers & Getting Around in Tamarindo, honestly
Tamarindo is about 70 km from Liberia International Airport (LIR) — plan on roughly 1 hour 15 minutes door to door, a bit more in wet-season rain or beach-day traffic. Shared shuttles are the budget option; private transfers cost more but leave on your schedule and go straight to your hotel or rental.
Private drivers are also the practical way to connect Tamarindo with Flamingo, Conchal, Potrero, Avellanas, and the other beach towns nearby, or to arrange a one-day car-and-driver instead of renting. If you're only planning one or two outings beyond walking distance, a driver usually beats a rental car on cost and hassle.
Inside town, most things are walkable — which is why golf carts and scooters, not rental cars, are the popular way to cover the last mile between your rental, the beach, and dinner.
Before you book
- Book airport pickups before you fly — confirmed pickups beat negotiating at the curb
- Confirm whether the price is per person or per vehicle before booking
- Allow extra buffer for the return trip to LIR during December–April peak traffic
- Ask the operator about car seats if you're traveling with small kids
