Local know-how
Waterfalls & Hot Springs in Tamarindo, honestly
La Leona is the local standout: a guided canyon hike with river wading and scrambling that ends at a waterfall pouring into a turquoise pool. It's genuinely adventurous — expect to get fully wet — and most operators set reasonable fitness and age expectations. Oropéndola and other falls near Rincón de la Vieja are easier walks if you want the swim without the scramble.
Hot springs here are volcanic: warm mineral pools and mud baths on the flanks of Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles, almost always bundled with waterfalls, ziplining, or horseback into a full-day combo. In green season the falls run big and the landscape is at its greenest — the trade-off is occasional trail closures after heavy rain.
Before you book
- Water shoes or secure sandals — most waterfall hikes involve river wading
- Bring a dry bag or leave phones in the van for canyon hikes
- Green season (May–Nov) means fuller falls but occasional closures after storms
- Combos bundle falls + hot springs + lunch — usually the best value for the drive
