Volcano & Day Tripsfrom Tamarindo
Tamarindo is a great base, but some of Guanacaste's best days happen inland: volcano hikes, the impossibly blue Río Celeste, Palo Verde's river wildlife, and full-day runs to Arenal.

Volcano & Day Trips in Tamarindo, honestly
The closest big day out is Rincón de la Vieja, roughly two hours away — an active volcano with hiking trails, waterfalls, hot springs, and mud baths, usually packaged as adventure combos (zipline, tubing, horseback) or as a national-park hike. It's the best effort-to-reward day trip from Tamarindo.
Río Celeste, in Tenorio Volcano National Park, is the famous turquoise river and waterfall — a longer drive (roughly 2.5 hours each way) but consistently one of the most memorable days people report. Arenal and La Fortuna are doable as a very long day trip; if Arenal is a priority, consider an overnight instead of cramming it into one day. Palo Verde's riverboat safaris are the closest wildlife-heavy option, and some operators run day trips across the border to Nicaragua — bring your passport and check current entry requirements.
Before you book
- Day trips start early — most pickups run between 6 and 8 am
- Río Celeste's color is best in drier weather; heavy rain can cloud it
- Arenal in one day is a long haul — consider an overnight if it's a priority
- Nicaragua day trips need your passport; check entry requirements when booking
