The short version
Operators here built their businesses around pickups, because visitors mostly don't have cars. Book the tour you want, enter where you're staying at checkout, and in the core zone it's typically included. The details below are for everyone outside that one sentence.
The pickup zones, roughly
- Core (nearly always included): central Tamarindo and Playa Langosta.
- Standard (most operators, sometimes with a supplement): Hacienda Pinilla, Playa Grande, and the Flamingo–Brasilito–Conchal–Potrero stretch.
- Extended (fewer operators — check per tour): Avellanas, Playa Negra, and resorts further north toward the Papagayo area.
- Airport runs are their own category: Liberia (LIR) transfers are point-to-point bookings, not tour pickups.
Where things depart, by tour type
- Catamarans and sailing: load from the beach in Tamarindo or from the Flamingo marina — many boats offer pickup in both towns; check the listing.
- Fishing and dive boats: mostly Tamarindo beach or Flamingo marina departures.
- Estuary safaris: meet at the estuary, walking distance from most of Tamarindo.
- Surf lessons: usually meet at the school or on the sand — pickup only matters if you're outside town.
- Inland day trips (Rincón, Río Celeste, Palo Verde): vans sweep the coast hotel by hotel, which is why pickups start early.
Making sure they find you
Guanacaste addresses are famously informal — '200 meters past the school, blue gate' is a real address format here. Tours still run on time; you just need to close the loop.
- Enter your hotel or rental name at checkout, then confirm the exact meeting point with the operator (Viator's chat passes messages through).
- In a gated community or villa? Agree on a gate or landmark — drivers often can't enter private communities.
- Reconfirm the pickup time the evening before for early departures; times shift with traffic plans.
- Be outside five minutes early. Vans on a multi-hotel sweep can't ring every doorbell.
- No pickup offered for your area? A local taxi or private driver to the meeting point usually costs less than upgrading the whole tour.
If you're staying outside Tamarindo
Staying in Flamingo, Potrero, or Conchal? Prefer boat tours that depart the Flamingo marina and inland tours that list your town — both are common. Staying south in Avellanas or Negra? Coverage is thinner; guided surf trips and private drivers fill the gap. Every area page on this site covers its own pickup reality.
