Tamarindo is roughly 70 km (about 45 miles) from Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR), usually 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by road. Most visitors pre-book a private transfer or a shared shuttle. A rental car makes sense if you plan several independent day trips. No bus leaves from the airport itself.

Private transfer: the default
A driver meets you at arrivals with a sign and takes you straight to your hotel or rental. It's the calmest option after a long flight, and for three or more people the per-person cost often lands close to a shuttle. Give your flight number when you book so the driver can track delays.

Shared shuttle: cheaper, slower
Shuttles run set departures and drop off at several hotels along the way, so the trip takes longer than a private car. If your flight is late you may wait for the next departure. Before booking, check the listing's policy for delayed flights.
Airport taxi
Official airport taxis wait outside arrivals. Confirm the fare to Tamarindo before your bags go in the trunk. For a group of four it can compare with a private transfer. The trade-off is negotiating when you're tired.
Rental car
Most rental companies serving LIR are off-site and run a shuttle from arrivals to their lot, so allow extra time. The drive to Tamarindo is on paved roads. Costa Rica requires third-party liability insurance, usually added at the counter, so an online rate that leaves it out is not the final price.
If you'll mostly stay in Tamarindo, you may not need a car at all: tours include pickup and the town is walkable.
Public bus
The cheapest route, and the slowest. There's no bus from the airport, so take a taxi to Liberia's bus terminal and catch a bus to Tamarindo there. Schedules change, so check times at the terminal.
Timing tips
- Going home: leave Tamarindo about 1.5 hours before you need to be at the airport, on top of the arrival time your airline recommends (often 3 hours for international flights).
- Book both legs at once if you're using a transfer. The return is easy to forget and busy in high season.
- Staying in Langosta, Playa Grande, Flamingo or Conchal? Transfers usually price by destination, so pick the listing that names your area.
