Palo Verde National Park protects the wetlands of the lower Tempisque River, about an hour and a half inland from Tamarindo. The standard trip is a guided boat safari on the Tempisque. You'll see crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys and a lot of water birds from a boat seat. Most tours from Tamarindo take 5 to 7 hours door to door and include hotel pickup, and many include lunch. They ask almost nothing physically, which makes this the easiest wildlife day on this coast.
What you'll actually see
The river is the attraction. Guides slow the boat for American crocodiles on the banks, iguanas in the trees, and howler and white-faced monkeys along the edge of the forest. Herons, egrets, storks, kingfishers and other water birds are everywhere. Nothing is guaranteed, but crocodiles and birds are close to certain, and guides are good at spotting what you'd miss.
Dry season or green season?
From roughly December to April the wetlands shrink, animals concentrate along the remaining water, and migratory birds arrive. That's the peak for birders, but it's also the hottest time. From May to November the landscape turns green and afternoon rain is likely, so morning departures are the better bet. The boat safari runs year-round.

The pottery stop
Several tours add a stop in Guaitil, a Chorotega pottery village near Santa Cruz on the way back, where families still make pottery by hand. If that interests you, pick a listing that mentions pottery or ceramics.
What to bring
- Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. The wetlands are hot and, in green season, buggy.
- Binoculars and a camera with some zoom. Much of the wildlife is across the water.
- A light long-sleeved layer against sun and mosquitoes.
- Cash for drinks or pottery if your tour stops in Guaitil.
