Rincón de la Vieja is an active volcano about two hours from Tamarindo, and the most popular day trip from this coast. "A Rincón tour" can mean two quite different days. One is a guided hike in the national park, past bubbling mud pots and steaming vents. The other is an adventure combo at a private lodge on the volcano's slopes, with ziplines, horseback riding, river tubing, hot springs and a volcanic mud bath. Decide which you want first, then pick the tour. Expect an early pickup and a long day: 8 to 12 hours door to door.

National park hikes
The Las Pailas sector is the volcano up close: a trail through dry forest past fumaroles, boiling mud pots and a small steaming "volcancito". The summit crater is closed to visitors because the volcano is active, so no tour takes you to the top, and there's no visible lava. The national park keeps set opening days and hours, so park-hike tours plan around them. Check dates on the listing.

Adventure combos at the lodges
Private ranches and lodges on the volcano's slopes, including Hacienda Guachipelín and Buena Vista, run their own ziplines, horse trails, tubing rivers, hot springs and mud baths. Combo tours string several of these together with lunch. This is the easiest way to fit a lot into one day, and the best fit for groups who can't agree on one activity.

Before you go
- Pickups are early, usually between 6 and 8 am, because vans collect guests along the coast.
- Wear closed shoes and bring a swimsuit, a towel and dry clothes for the hot springs and mud.
- Ziplines and horses have age, height and weight limits that vary by lodge, so check the listing.
- In green season, waterfalls run fuller and trails get muddy. Storms can pause ziplines.
